Danza de gigantes / A Dance with Giants

"Un terremoto!". "No capitán, formacio... una unidad de gigantes!!". Pues sí, incluso Leónidas se habría quedado patidifuso (haber como traduzco yo esto al inglés...) al ver avanzar esta unidad hacia las Termópilas. Pero por suerte para él, llevan rumbo a Kislev. Con paso... no del todo firme... pero a grandes zancadas, eso sí.

"Earthquake!". "No captain, battle forma... a unit of giants!!". Even King Leonidas would have been surprised seeing this unit advancing toward Thermopylae. But fortunately for him, they go to Kislev. With steps... not steady at all... but with long strides, surely.

Hace seis meses publiqué las conversiones de estos gigantes y escribí: "¡Espero terminarlos pronto!" (lo podéis ver aquí). Bueno, ha pasado exactamente medio año, pero finalmente aquí están.

Six months ago I wrote a post describing a little bit these conversions and I finished that article stating "I hope to finish them soon!" (you can see it here). Well, exactly half a year later, here they are.

Poco a poco voy a probando cosas con el aerógrafo, aunque lo cierto es que me está costando mucho más de lo previsto aprender a pintar bien con esta herramienta. Pero cuando le vas cogiendo el truquillo, avanzas muy rápido. La base de la piel de los 5 grandotes la pinté en una hora o dos, y siendo la mitad de la miniatura, eso me ahorró muchísimo tiempo. En el resto de la miniatura, he tardado un par de semanas.

Step by step I'm learning to use the airbrush, although slower than I expected. But when you get the point, your work advances very fast. The base colour for skin of the 5 big ones was painted an hour or two, and being half of the miniature, that saved me a lot of time. The rest of the model, took me a pair of weeks.

Quizá alguno pensará que no parecen unos gigantes muy caóticos. Bueno, eso es perfectamente respetable, pero mi intención no era la de representar a una monstruosidad mutante, sino más bien a unos gigantes norteños; como si fueran los primos grandes de los bárbaros del caos. Es por ello que todos tienen algunos detalles caóticos (escudos, armas, trozos de armadura, tatuajes...) pero pocas mutaciones.

Maybe someone could think these giants are not very chaotic looking. Well, this could be strue, but my goal was not to represent a mutant monstruousity but nordic giants; like a bigger familiar of the chaos marauders. For that reason all them have some chaotic elements (shields, weapons, armoury pieces, tatoos), but so less mutations.





Este primer modelo, el único que tenía terminado de antemano, lo pinté hace unos 8 o 10 años. La conversión me costó su tiempo para lograr que pareciera la viñeta de una lucha entre colosos: un gigante a punto de asestar el golpe final a un shaggoth. Pero el tono de la piel no cuadraba bien ni con el resto del ejército ni tampoco me terminaba de gustarme, así que aprovechando que tenía que pintar los otros cuatro, lo repinté.

This first model, the only I have previously painted, was finished about 8 or 10 years ago. It was not easy to represent a dynamic scene where two colossal warriors fight each other, where the giant is close to assest the mortal wound to the shaggoth. But now, the colour of his skin was not the same as the rest of my current chaos army, and, in fact, it never convinced me at all. So, taking advantage that I had to paint the other four, I repainted it. 

En cuanto al resto de gigantes, quería que todos ellos tuvieran una posición única, y no me puse a transformarlos hasta que no los tuve todos en mis manos. Busqué un montón de referencias en ilustraciones y obras de arte que han realizado otros pintores de miniaturas, algunos de los cuales os pongo aquí debajo.

Regarding the rest of the giants, I want all them with a particular and unique position, and as soon as I get it all, I started to work on them. I search many references, from illustrations to hobbists conversions, some of them you can see below.

El siguiente gigante que tuve en mente fue este. Es el único que en lugar de un garrote porta un pedrusco enorme justo antes de ser lanzado. Bueno, en realidad se trata de una estatua imperial procedente de la matiz de la gorgona/cíclope. Además de varios detalles de otras matrices (de reinos ogros, guerreros del caos, bárbaros del caos y de eldars oscuros) le añadí una mandíbula gigante en su cabeza a modo de corona. Me pareció un modo muy "gigantil" de autoafirmación personal.

Next giant was this. He's the only one he wears an enormous rock ready to throw instead a big club. Well, it's an imperial statute from the gorgon/cyclop sprue, actually. Other details were fixed from bits of ogres, chaos warriors, chaos marauders, dark eldar. Special attention on the giant jaw he wera upon his head like a crown. I think this was the best way to represent how the giants applies selfassertation.

Este tercer gigante lo compré ya montado y pintado a un señor bombero. Y digo señor no por ser masculino sino porque el tío se porta como tal en los torneos, siendo como es, un gran jugador. El caso es que le cambié la cabeza y las manos, le añadí algunos detalles más como la correa, las hombreras y el protegetripas, y lo repinté.

Third giant was bought in second hand forums, from a gentleman who works as a firefighter. And I say gentleman, because he plays as one in tourmaments. In this case, I changed his haed and hands, fixed some details (i.e. the belt and the shoulder straps) and finally the whole model was repainted.

En el siguiente caso quería plasmar uno de los ataques favoritos del gigante: aplastar. Así que tuve que modelar la parte superior de la pierna casi por entero, la planta del pie levantado (originalmente hueco) y el cuello, para que mirase hacia abajo. A destacar que pinte nada menos que tres veces ese taparrabos, porque no conseguía dar con el esquema adecuado. El garrote pertenece a los tripasduras ogro.

In the following case I wanted to capture one of the giant's favorite attack: crushing. So I had to sculp the upper part of the leg almost entirely, the raised sole (originally hollow) and the neck. Furthermore, I had to paint three times the loincloth, because I could not find the right scheme. The big club belongs to the ogre's ironguts.

Por último, el quinto de los gigante es uno de mis preferidos. En este caso recoloqué tanto la posición del cuerpo como el cuello para que avanzara erguido y con paso firme. Además de añadir otros detalles me centré en su arma: de nuevo, un garrote. En este caso se trata de uno de los garrotes de la propia matriz del gigante algo modificada para que encajara mejor en esta nueva posición.

Finally, the fifth giant is one of my favourites. In this case I repositioned both the position of the body and the neck so the giant now advance straight and steady. After adding other details I focused on his weapon: again, a giant club. In this case it's one of the clubs of the giant's sprue but a little bit modified to fit better in this new position.
